Major global powers have issued urgent calls for restraint and diplomacy following a significant escalation in military tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The international community, including China, Russia, Iran, and the United Nations, is pressing both nations to halt cross-border attacks immediately.
Operation Ghazab lil-Haq: Pakistan’s Military Response
Pakistan confirmed it launched a comprehensive military operation, dubbed “Operation Ghazab lil-Haq,” in response to what it termed unprovoked aggression from the Afghan Taliban regime. Federal Minister for Information Atta Tarar stated that the operation resulted in 133 militants killed and over 200 injured. Security sources reported that Pakistani forces destroyed several key Taliban posts, after which Afghan forces reportedly raised white flags at multiple positions.
International Diplomatic Pressure Mounts
The response from world capitals has been swift, emphasizing de-escalation and dialogue.
China expressed deep concern over the border clashes. Foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated Beijing is mediating through its channels and is willing to play a constructive role in cooling the situation.
Russia called on both countries to cease attacks “immediately” and resolve differences through diplomatic channels. The Russian foreign ministry, cited by the RIA news agency, added that Moscow would consider offering mediation if formally requested by both sides.
Iran offered to facilitate dialogue. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on social media that Tehran stands ready to provide any necessary assistance to enhance understanding and cooperation between Islamabad and Kabul.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is closely monitoring the situation with deep concern. His spokesperson stressed that both countries must fulfil their obligations under international law and prioritize the protection of civilians.
Regional Diplomacy in Motion
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, to discuss the crisis. Dar underscored that Pakistan’s response was a necessary action to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Both leaders emphasized the importance of regional peace and stability and agreed to remain closely engaged.
