Karachi Accelerates K-IV Water Pipeline to Meet Deadline

Teams Target Two Major Pipes Daily in Final Push

The Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP) has significantly intensified construction efforts on the massive K-IV water pipeline. Officials confirmed that work at the Nipa site has been accelerated, with teams now aiming to lay two major pipeline segments daily to complete the project within the stipulated timeline.

Navigating a Congested Corridor

The installation is progressing along a challenging 2.7-kilometre stretch that shares a corridor with the under-construction BRT Red Line. Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) officials stated that despite severe technical and safety constraints, the project has entered its final phase. Excavation is being carried out to a depth of six metres in an area already congested with existing utility lines.

Apology for Disruption and Technical Challenges

KW&SC Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Ali Siddiqui publicly apologized for the disruption caused to residents, shopkeepers, commuters, and students. He emphasized that all possible steps are being taken to finish the job on time. Project spokespersons detailed the extreme challenges, noting that in some locations, only five feet of working space is available, requiring modern, carefully managed excavation techniques to protect the public and existing infrastructure.

  • Work was temporarily halted in November following two separate incidents of utility damage.
  • The team has since regained momentum and successfully laid 36 pipes to date.
  • The project is a major Sindh government initiative expected to supply an additional 260 million gallons of water per day to Karachi.

Leadership Focus and Public Updates

CEO Siddiqui acknowledged the special attention given to the project by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah following a recent site visit, reiterating that timely and quality completion remains the organization’s top priority. Authorities confirmed that regular updates on daily progress are being shared through the corporation’s official website and social media platforms.
