Spain Crush Pakistan 5-1, Extending Winless Streak

Spain Crush Pakistan 5-1, Extending Winless Streak

Pakistan’s torrid campaign in the FIH Pro League plumbed new depths on Sunday as they slumped to a crushing 5-1 defeat against Spain at the Belfius Hockey Arena. The loss marks the Green Shirts’ ninth consecutive defeat, leaving them anchored to the bottom of the standings without a single point.

First-Half Blitz Sets the Tone

Spain seized the initiative early, with Alvarez Nicolas breaking the deadlock in the 11th minute of the opening quarter. The early strike rattled the Pakistani defense, and the quarter concluded with Spain holding a narrow but deserved 1-0 lead.

The second quarter saw Spain transform their control into a commanding advantage. Pakistan squandered a crucial penalty corner opportunity, failing to convert the set piece. At the opposite end, Cunill Pepe proved ruthlessly efficient, scoring twice to propel Spain to a formidable 3-0 halftime lead. The defensive frailties that have plagued Pakistan throughout the tournament were once again laid bare.

Brief Resurgence, Familiar Collapse

Emerging from the break with renewed urgency, Pakistan managed to claw their way back into the contest. Abu Mahmood offered a glimmer of hope in the 43rd minute, finding the net to reduce the deficit to 3-1. The goal injected a fleeting sense of belief into the squad, and two subsequent penalty corners provided golden opportunities to narrow the gap further. However, the Green Shirts’ conversion woes continued, as both chances went begging.

Any momentum Pakistan had generated evaporated in the final quarter. Spain shifted gears decisively, delivering a clinical finishing masterclass. Reyne Merc and Alvarez Nicolas, grabbing his second of the match, each scored to complete the 5-1 rout and extinguish any doubt about the outcome.

Table Dynamics and Future Fixtures

The emphatic victory represents a significant milestone for Spain, marking their first win of the campaign. The three points lift them to seventh place with five points, though their goal difference remains at -16. For Pakistan, the statistics paint a grim picture. After nine straight defeats, they sit at the very bottom of the table with a goal difference of -30, a stark indicator of the challenges facing the squad.

The road ahead does not get any easier for the beleaguered Green Shirts. They are scheduled to face a formidable Belgian side at the same venue on June 19, a match where they will be desperate to arrest their alarming slide and secure their first points of the tournament.
