ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has publicly thanked United States President Donald Trump for his supportive remarks on the newly signed Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, framing the pact as a cornerstone for regional stability and collective security.
In a statement posted on X, the prime minister said he “deeply appreciated” Trump’s recognition of the trilateral agreement involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye. The accord, signed recently, aims to bolster defence coordination among the three nations.
A Constructive Role in Regional Defence
Sharif emphasized that Pakistan would continue to work alongside its partners to secure not only their own borders but the broader region.
“Together with the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Türkiye, Pakistan will continue to play a constructive role in ensuring the defence of our own countries as well as the entire region,” he wrote.
The prime minister also lauded Trump’s leadership, crediting him with helping to avert a nuclear crisis in South Asia.
Praise for ‘Courageous and Decisive Leadership’
“I would also like to once again commend President Trump for his courageous and decisive leadership, which helped avert a nuclear catastrophe in South Asia and saved millions of lives,” Sharif stated.
He underscored that lasting peace remains the essential foundation for prosperity across the region.
“Durable peace is the most essential prerequisite for a bright and prosperous future for our peoples,” he added.
Trump Welcomes the Trilateral Pact
The exchange follows Trump’s enthusiastic endorsement of the agreement on his Truth Social platform. The former US president described the deal as a significant milestone for Middle Eastern and South Asian security cooperation.
“THIS IS A BIG, BOLD, AND IMPORTANT FIRST STEP — WOW!” Trump wrote. “It shows how the Middle East is coming together, and how Countries will finally be able to defend themselves in a more meaningful way.”
He specifically welcomed the involvement of Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Pakistan, calling the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement a long-awaited development.
Strategic Implications
The agreement is seen by analysts as a potential shift in regional security dynamics, reducing reliance on external powers while fostering deeper military and strategic ties among key Muslim-majority nations. The public exchange between Sharif and Trump also signals continued diplomatic warmth between Islamabad and Washington, despite broader geopolitical complexities.
The prime minister’s remarks were accompanied by a social media post that included a link to his full statement, reinforcing the government’s commitment to transparent communication on foreign policy matters.
