OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Teens With New Safety Features

OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Teens With New Safety Features

OpenAI has begun deploying a dedicated version of its AI assistant for adolescents, named ChatGPT for Teens, the company announced Tuesday. The rollout comes one year after a lawsuit accused the chatbot of contributing to the suicide of a 16-year-old American boy.

The new version automatically applies to any user who declares themselves a minor or whom OpenAI detects as under 18 based on signals such as account age and usage patterns. It is enabled by default for users aged 13 to 17, with reinforced guardrails.

What Changes in ChatGPT for Teens

Most of the safeguards were already in place for accounts identified as minors: restricted content on self-harm, violence, eating disorders, and explicit sexuality; regular break reminders; blocked time slots; and a “study mode” that guides students with questions rather than providing direct answers.

The new version consolidates these protections into a single experience. It adds more frequent reminders to seek human help when needed and warnings against cheating on homework. Voice functionality is disabled to make the tool feel less human, and the bot is instructed not to imply that it experiences emotions, according to OpenAI.

Parental Alerts and Human Oversight

OpenAI is also expanding its parental alert system, first launched in fall 2025 and broadened in July. If a teenager links their account to an adult’s — a connection they can break at any time — the adult is notified in cases of suicidal risk or self-harm signals, or if the account is disabled for violent content. Each alert is validated by a human reviewer, without revealing the exact content of conversations, OpenAI said.

Legal Pressure and Regulatory Context

The launch arrives amid mounting legal and regulatory scrutiny. The parents of Adam Raine, a California teenager who died by suicide in April 2025, have sued OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT accompanied their son in his final act. Since September 2025, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has been investigating the effects of chatbots from seven companies on minors.

Competitors have taken different approaches. Character.AI closed its free-form conversations to users under 18 in November 2025. Anthropic restricts its assistant Claude to adults. Google has added restrictions for minors to Gemini, strengthening them in April after a critical evaluation by the nonprofit Common Sense Media, which Google disputes.

Global Regulatory Shifts

Like social media before it, generative AI is facing tighter legal frameworks. California has required guardrails for chatbots acting as companions or confidants since January. The U.S. Congress is considering banning access for minors altogether, and Australia now mandates age verification under penalty of fines.

In the European Union, where automated profiling of minors is heavily regulated, the age estimation feature promised in January has not yet been deployed. The teenage experience currently relies solely on self-declared age. OpenAI indicated Tuesday that “the age prediction feature will be deployed in the coming weeks” in the EU.

OpenAI now counts more than one billion users of ChatGPT.
