Saudi Crown Prince MBS Visits Paris for Major Deals

Saudi Crown Prince MBS Visits Paris for Major Deals

The Saudi crown prince and de facto ruler, Mohammed bin Salman, arrived in Paris on Sunday for a two-day visit expected to yield a flurry of economic agreements and high-level diplomatic discussions. The trip, which runs through Monday, underscores the deepening ties between France and Saudi Arabia at a moment of acute regional instability.

The Élysée Palace confirmed the visit would result in the signing of “numerous agreements,” framing the engagement as a testament to the “dynamism of the Franco-Saudi relationship in a tense regional context.” While several projects remain under negotiation, French officials anticipate a substantial package of economic deals spanning multiple sectors.

A Wave of Economic Agreements on the Horizon

According to the French presidency, the agreements set to be signed on Monday will cover a broad spectrum of industries, including transportation, energy, and healthcare. “Things are still under discussion for certain projects, but there will be many, many economic agreements in different sectors that will be signed on Monday,” an Élysée spokesperson stated.

A ministerial-level meeting is also scheduled for Monday to address the diversification of energy supply routes. The discussions carry added urgency as the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global hydrocarbon transit, remains effectively blockaded by Iran. The strategic waterway’s closure has forced energy-dependent nations to seek alternative corridors, a topic of mutual interest for Paris and Riyadh.

From Esports to Regional Security

The crown prince’s itinerary begins on a notably modern note: he will attend the closing ceremony of the Esports World Cup at the Porte de Versailles exhibition center. The gaming competition, described as “global in scale,” is being held outside Saudi Arabia for the first time, highlighting the kingdom’s push to project soft power through entertainment and sports.

Following the esports event, Mohammed bin Salman will hold talks with French President Emmanuel Macron. The diplomatic agenda is dense, covering the escalating Iran-Saudi Arabia crisis, the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the two-state solution, as well as the situations in Lebanon and Syria. Cultural cooperation, particularly regarding the archaeological site of Al-Ula, will also feature in the discussions.

A Highly Symbolic First Foreign Trip in Months

French officials emphasized the symbolic weight of the visit, noting that it marks the crown prince’s first foreign trip “in several months.” The choice of Paris as the destination signals the importance Riyadh places on its relationship with France, both as an economic partner and a diplomatic interlocutor.

A formal signing ceremony for the bilateral agreements is scheduled for late Monday afternoon, capping a visit designed to produce tangible outcomes rather than mere symbolic gestures.

Dragon Ball Theme Park Speculation Remains Unanswered

When pressed on reports of a potential Saudi-backed investment to build a Dragon Ball theme park in the Val-d’Oise department near Paris, the Élysée declined to comment. “We never comment on ongoing projects, decisions, or negotiations as long as they have not been confirmed,” a spokesperson explained.

Nevertheless, the French presidency made clear that Macron is “keen to promote and strengthen foreign investment in France” and will use the visit to call for increased Saudi investment in the country. The statement leaves the door open for ambitious projects, even as officials remain tight-lipped on specifics.

The visit comes at a delicate moment for regional security, with the Strait of Hormuz standoff and broader Iran tensions dominating the strategic landscape. For France, the crown prince’s presence offers a chance to reinforce its role as a key European partner for the Gulf kingdom. For Saudi Arabia, the trip provides an opportunity to secure economic partnerships and diplomatic backing as it navigates a volatile neighborhood.
