Raphaël Glucksmann, co-founder of the Place publique movement, officially launched his candidacy on Sunday evening, promising to increase workers’ net pay by reducing social contributions on salaries. His entry into the race has already triggered ripple effects, including the withdrawal of his partner, journalist Léa Salamé, from presenting the evening news on France 2 to avoid a conflict of interest.
Glucksmann’s candidacy adds to a crowded field that includes Marine Le Pen, Édouard Philippe, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, and Gabriel Attal, among others. The political fragmentation complicates the government’s ability to pass a budget, with opposition parties already threatening censure motions. Sandrine Rousseau, an ecologist deputy, stated bluntly: “I have no doubt about the censorship. We have lived through a summer of all dangers, and the only proposal put on the table by Sébastien Lecornu is to de-index pensions.”
