PM Shehbaz Reaffirms Pakistan's Commitment to Democracy

ISLAMABAD — Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to the fundamental values of democracy, including equality, justice, and freedom, as the nation joined the international community in observing the International Day of Democracy.

In a message marking the occasion, the prime minister described the day as an opportunity to renew the nation’s resolve to respect the will of the people, safeguard human dignity, and uphold the rule of law.

Democracy as a System of Public Welfare

PM Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that in a democratic system, authority is exercised through elected representatives of the people, working for their welfare and well-being. He stated that Parliament, as the central democratic institution of the country, embodies the voice and aspirations of the people.

The prime minister noted that the Constitution of Pakistan provides the legal framework governing the relationship between the state and its citizens. He specifically referenced Article 25 of the Constitution, which guarantees equal rights to all citizens and equality before the law.

Constitutional Framework and Parliamentary Duties

According to the prime minister, the Constitution also defines the respective roles of the federating units, safeguards the constitutional standing of national institutions, and lays down the framework for governance and administration.

He explained that Pakistan’s federal parliamentary democratic system entrusts Parliament with the responsibility to legislate in accordance with public interest and Islamic principles. He added that formulating laws in line with public aspirations and the evolving demands of the contemporary era remains among Parliament’s fundamental responsibilities.

Call for Strengthening Democratic Values

PM Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that to effectively address the challenges of the present era and secure a prosperous future, it is imperative to remain steadfast in upholding and strengthening the democratic values that form the foundation of public welfare.

Inclusive Representation and Minority Rights

The prime minister highlighted that the Constitution clearly affirms the state’s commitment to ensuring the full participation of women in all spheres of national life. He pointed out that reserved seats for women in the federal and provincial legislatures have been provided to ensure their effective representation.

He further stated that the state is equally committed to safeguarding the rights, interests, and legitimate concerns of minorities. Reserved seats for non-Muslim minorities have likewise been provided in the federal and provincial legislatures to ensure their representation.
