Renowned Pakistani fashion designer and actor Hassan Sheheryar Yasin, widely known as HSY, has disclosed that he was left completely unable to see for nearly a year following a road accident, describing the ordeal as one of the most defining experiences of his life.
A Ramadan Journey That Ended in Tragedy
Speaking on a recent podcast, the celebrated couturier recounted the events that led to the loss of his vision. According to HSY, the accident took place during Ramadan, when he and a friend were returning home after buying food for iftar. His friend was behind the wheel when the call to prayer sounded.
HSY explained that he opened the food bag inside the vehicle, releasing a large amount of steam that quickly fogged up the car’s interior and blurred his vision. As his friend attempted to clear the windows, the vehicle veered off the road and crashed.
During the collision, HSY struck the windshield, sustaining injuries that cost him his sight in both eyes.
A Life Altered in an Instant
Reflecting on the aftermath, the designer said the sudden loss of vision inflicted severe mental stress and fundamentally changed the way he viewed and experienced life.
He noted that with his sight gone, he was forced to rely far more heavily on his other senses. In one particularly poignant memory, he recalled being able to hear his mother weeping from several rooms away.
Recovery Through Treatment and Surgery
According to HSY, his vision remained affected for approximately one year. He subsequently underwent treatment and multiple surgeries, eventually regaining his eyesight.
Beyond the accident, HSY also used the podcast appearance to speak candidly about the hardships he faced during his childhood and the sacrifices made by his mother, offering a rare glimpse into the personal struggles behind his public persona.
