Wedding Convoy in Saint-Priest Hit With €11,000 in Fines as Mayor Says ‘We’re Not in the Wild West’

Wedding Convoy in Saint-Priest Hit With €11,000 in Fines as Mayor Says 'We're Not in the Wild West'

A wedding celebration in the Lyon suburb of Saint-Priest spiraled into a large-scale police operation on Saturday, September 26, resulting in 87 traffic violations and nearly €11,000 in fines, according to authorities.

The convoy of roughly 50 vehicles was spotted driving at dangerously slow speeds, with passengers sitting on car doors and horns blaring throughout the neighbourhood. The scene quickly drew the ire of local residents.

“It was particularly noisy,” one woman told reporters. “You’d think we’d get used to it, but actually, not really.” Another resident said the fireworks and firecrackers were the most disruptive element, adding that “that’s what really bothered the neighbourhood.”

Police Respond With 87 Violations

After being alerted, police reviewed surveillance camera footage and identified a significant number of traffic offences and particularly dangerous behaviour. The toll: €10,945 in fines and 242 license points deducted from drivers.

Saint-Priest Mayor Gilles Gascon (Les Républicains) stood firmly behind the intervention.

“Vehicles were driving at roughly 80 to 100 km/h on tramway tracks. Can we accept that?” Gascon said. “It is the mayor’s responsibility to be able to intervene. I cannot let this kind of thing happen. I saw people driving the wrong way, cutting off bus and tram lanes. There are mothers with strollers, people on the pavements. We are not in the Wild West here.”

Residents Divided Over Police Response

While the mayor’s stance was unambiguous, the sheer scale of the crackdown has divided local opinion. Some residents support the firm response, while others question whether such a heavy-handed approach was warranted for what is, after all, a wedding celebration.

The incident highlights a broader challenge facing French municipalities, where mayors and local authorities are increasingly called upon to balance community traditions with public safety and quality of life for residents. The question of what tools elected officials have at their disposal to enforce the law — and prevent festivities from turning into a nightmare for neighbours — remains a pressing concern in many communities.
