Ukraine’s AI Gun Turrets: The Race to Down Russia’s New Jet Drones

Ukraine's AI Gun Turrets: The Race to Down Russia's New Jet Drones

KYIV — Has the war of the machines begun? Ukraine has started intercepting Russian jet-powered drones using heavy machine guns mounted on turrets guided by artificial intelligence, the Ukrainian Air Force announced on Monday, October 5, 2026.

“Robotic turrets are being installed on bridges,” Yurii Ihnat, spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, said on television, adding that these systems “have already enabled the downing of new-generation jet drones near the Ukrainian capital.” He described the turrets as “essentially a mobile firing unit without a human operator, already using optical vision and artificial intelligence to eliminate the human factor and carry out strikes.”

A Low-Cost Answer to a Growing Threat

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has sought to counter waves of low-cost combat drones inspired by the Iranian Shahed, which Moscow has used en masse against Ukrainian territory. The Ukrainian military claimed to shoot down more than 90% of standard drones, largely thanks to a network of mobile air-defense groups whose soldiers use machine guns and interceptor drones.

But Russia has evolved its drones, increasing their speed and the altitude at which they fly, particularly since the summer of 2026 — a shift that has made traditional interception methods far less effective.

According to Éric Biegala, a defense specialist at Radio France’s international desk, “the advantage of mounting such a weapon is that it is widely available and inexpensive. And so is the ammunition.” The weapon itself is nothing new: a 12.7 mm machine gun, the .50 caliber used by the U.S. military and in service since World War II.

“They are now mounted on a turret with a panoramic 360-degree horizontal sweep,” the expert noted.

Machine Vision Replaces the Human Eye

The real innovation lies in targeting and reaction speed. “It is not an operator who spots, identifies and determines engagement solutions for targets, but an AI that ‘watches’ the skies. This is what we call ‘machine vision,'” Biegala said. “It precisely identifies the type of object it observes in a fraction of a second. Normally, a human operator — remotely — gives the green light, but speed is essential. One can easily imagine the system operating in complete autonomy, with all the risks that entails.”

“The application then proposes a firing solution based on ambient parameters: day or night, target speed, altitude, distance, temperature, humidity, and so on,” he added.

Serhii Beskrestnov, a technology adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky, said on Telegram that twelve of these turrets had already been installed in the capital and that deployment would continue.

Ideal for Defending Fixed Targets

Biegala said such weapons are “perfectly suited to protecting important fixed targets, such as Kyiv’s bridges — with a wide open perimeter around them. The southern bridge in Kyiv, attacked in recent days, is more than a kilometer long over the Dnipro. It is ideal for this kind of defensive weaponry.”

The weapon’s main limitation, he said, is its effective range — between 1,000 and 2,000 meters.

Ukraine’s Head Start in AI-Boosted Warfare

For the specialist, the AI war that has been predicted for years has well and truly begun. “We are already in the thick of it, and everyone is getting on board,” he said.

Indeed, the integration of artificial intelligence into defense capabilities is accelerating in Ukraine. On the front line, it is already used to guide drones, detect targets to strike, and coordinate large-scale operations.

These AI-boosted machine guns fit into a clear Kyiv strategy. “Ukraine has, through its drone war, a distinct advantage with millions of hours of battlefield video serving as gigantic databases to train AI to recognize objectives, tactics, movements, even electromagnetic radiation,” Biegala said. “They already have a Combat Management System called Delta that fuses all of this in real time, capable of spotting gaps in the enemy’s disposition or a foot infiltration, and proposing ‘processing’ solutions within seconds.” According to him, even the Americans have been impressed.

Ukraine also sees the use of automated weapons as a response to its shortage of military personnel, in the face of a far more populous Russia.

Moscow, however, is not standing still. “Russia has some weapons with autonomous guidance capability in the attack phase, able to change targets based on what the seeker can recognize. But they are still far from having an equivalent of Delta,” Biegala said.

Western Armies Play Catch-Up

In France, the Army, the Navy, and the Air and Space Force are “permanently” testing this type of system, such as the Proteus 2 anti-drone cannon. But, the expert noted, “Western armies lack Ukraine’s gigantic database. To my knowledge, only the British have obtained access to the Delta database, and it is unclear on what terms of exchange.”

As Kyiv expands its AI-powered defenses, the conflict is increasingly becoming a testing ground for autonomous warfare — one in which software, data, and machine speed may prove as decisive as firepower.
