Bank of Punjab Reports Record H1 2026 Profit

Bank of Punjab Reports Record H1 2026 Profit

The Bank of Punjab (BOP) has announced its most robust operating performance to date for the first half of 2026, with operating profit climbing 67 percent year on year to Rs22.5 billion. The surge was fueled by a significant rise in net interest income and a sharp increase in non-markup revenue, reinforcing the bank’s growth trajectory.

Core Income Drivers Power Earnings Growth

Net interest income rose 29 percent to Rs46.1 billion, reflecting proactive asset-liability management and disciplined lending. Non-markup income, excluding gains, jumped 61 percent to Rs11.9 billion, highlighting stronger fee-based revenue and broader diversification across business lines.

Profit before tax increased 35 percent year on year to Rs20.5 billion, while profit after tax grew 40 percent to Rs9.5 billion. The bank’s cost-to-income ratio improved by 2.40 percentage points compared to the same period last year, underscoring tighter expense control and enhanced operational efficiency.

Balance Sheet Expansion and Capital Strength

BOP’s total assets reached Rs2,504 billion, with total deposits rising to Rs2,154 billion. Current deposits recorded 20 percent year-on-year growth, while average current deposits grew by an even stronger 26 percent. Gross advances expanded 28 percent to Rs996 billion, including financing for priority sectors of the economy.

The bank’s capital position remained comfortably above regulatory requirements. The Capital Adequacy Ratio stood at 13.69 percent, and the leverage ratio was recorded at 3.65 percent. BOP also remained fully compliant with IFRS 9 provisioning standards.

AAA Rating Upgrade and International Expansion

During 2026, the Pakistan Credit Rating Agency (PACRA) upgraded BOP’s long-term entity rating to AAA, the highest possible rating, with a Stable Outlook. The upgrade reflects the strengthening of the bank’s financial profile, market position, risk management and governance framework.

BOP is preparing to expand its international footprint after receiving in-principle approval from the State Bank of Pakistan to establish an Overseas Wholesale Banking Unit in Bahrain. The proposed unit is expected to enhance cross-border banking capabilities, improve regional connectivity and support institutional relationships across the Middle East.

Proposed Government Equity Injection

Another major development is the proposed issuance of ordinary shares to the Government of Punjab for up to PKR30 billion. The proposal, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals, would be implemented in two tranches. Up to PKR20 billion would be injected by December 31, 2026, with the remainder subscribed by June 30, 2027. The equity support would increase the bank’s capacity for balance sheet expansion and provide greater flexibility for strategic growth.

Recognition at Pakistan Banking Awards 2026

BOP secured three awards at the Pakistan Banking Awards 2026, winning Best Bank for Agriculture Inclusion, Best SME Bank and Best Bank for Women’s Inclusion. The agriculture and women’s inclusion awards mark the bank’s third consecutive year of recognition in both categories, while the SME award represents its fourth win in the category over the past five years.

The bank said it is the only institution to have won three awards for two consecutive years and the only bank to achieve a unique vertical and horizontal hat-trick across the awards.

Highest-Ever Interim Dividend

The board of directors declared the highest-ever interim cash dividend of 16 percent, underscoring continued earnings growth and shareholder returns. The unaudited results for the six months ended June 30, 2026, were reviewed and approved by BOP’s Board of Directors.

BOP continues to serve as a financial partner to the Government of Punjab, supporting public welfare programmes, priority-sector financing and broader development initiatives. Its operations span conventional and digital banking services for individuals, farmers, SMEs, corporate customers and public-sector institutions, alongside an expanding national footprint and a focus on financial inclusion.
