European System Closure to Disrupt Payments from Christmas Eve
French bank customers are being urged to plan ahead for their year-end money transfers as Europe’s interbank payment system prepares for its annual Christmas shutdown. The TARGET2 platform, which processes standard euro transfers between banks across the Eurozone, will cease operations from the afternoon of December 24, creating a payment blackout period that extends through December 29.
Extended Disruption Due to Holiday Calendar
The closure coincides with European public holidays on December 25 and 26, with the weekend further extending the interruption period. According to the European Central Bank’s 2025 calendar, this year’s shutdown is particularly lengthy due to the alignment of holidays and weekend days.
During this period:
- Standard SEPA transfers between different banks will not be processed
- Payments initiated after December 24 afternoon will not reach recipients until December 29
- The system will also close again on January 1 for New Year’s Day
Which Payments Are Affected?
The disruption specifically impacts non-instant SEPA transfers, including:
- Regular payments such as rent and salaries
- Automatic direct debits converted to transfers
- Scheduled one-time transfers between different banking institutions
However, several payment methods will remain unaffected:
- Instant SEPA transfers (available 24/7)
- Transfers between accounts within the same bank
- Regular card payments and cash withdrawals
Advance Planning Recommended
Financial experts recommend that consumers take proactive measures to avoid potential issues:
- Initiate important transfers before December 24 afternoon
- Verify bank balances before the holiday period to prevent overdrafts
- Consider using instant transfer options where available, though these may involve additional fees
Banking institutions will retain all transfer orders received during the shutdown period and process them simultaneously when the TARGET2 system reopens on December 29. The annual closure is a standard procedure for the European payment infrastructure during major holidays, though the extended duration this year requires particular attention from consumers and businesses alike.
