A shocking act of violence unfolded in the heart of Paris on Tuesday, August 25, when a cyclist was stabbed in the neck by a motorist following a road rage incident. The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed the attack to AFP on Wednesday, stating that the driver has been arrested and the cyclist’s life is no longer in danger.
The altercation occurred around 1:20 p.m. on Rue de Sèze in the 9th arrondissement, a bustling area of the French capital. According to a police source, the confrontation erupted after a traffic accident between the two individuals.
Details of the Attack and Arrest
“The two individuals exchanged insults, and then the cyclist punched him through the window. The driver then struck him in the throat with a knife. He then fled the scene,” the public prosecutor’s office detailed. French newspaper Le Figaro reported that the cyclist was attempting to prevent the driver from fleeing after the accident.
Following an investigation, the driver was arrested around 5 p.m. on Tuesday. An inquiry for “attempted murder” has been assigned to the 1st district of the Paris judicial police.
Cyclist Suffers Superficial Wounds
The cyclist was rushed to the Georges-Pompidou European Hospital in “absolute emergency with a suspected carotid artery injury.” Initially, his life was considered to be in danger. However, by late afternoon, he was released with an initial medical certificate indicating “superficial wounds” and “two days of total temporary incapacity for work.”
According to Le Parisien, which spoke to witnesses on Wednesday morning, the victim is a man in his twenties who worked as a bicycle delivery courier.
Paris Mayor Condemns “Unacceptable” Violence
Emmanuel Grégoire, the Socialist mayor of Paris, swiftly denounced the aggression on Tuesday. “I learn with dread and anger of the unbearable violence suffered by a cyclist this afternoon in the streets of Paris,” he wrote on his X account, emphasizing that “acts of violence against cyclists” are “unacceptable” and “still occur too often.”
“The fight against motorized violence will be waged relentlessly, because roads and streets must be spaces of respect and safety for everyone,” he added, expressing his “full support to the victim and their loved ones.”
A Pattern of Violence Against Cyclists
This incident echoes the tragic death of Paul Varry, a 27-year-old cyclist who was run over by an SUV driver after an altercation in the 8th arrondissement in October 2024. That case sparked widespread outrage. The driver, Ariel M., will be tried for murder before the Paris Assize Court. His driving license had already been suspended twice prior to the fatal incident.
