Discovery and Arrest
The body of a 70-year-old woman, identified as Liliane, was discovered in an advanced state of decomposition in her apartment in Courbevoie, Hauts-de-Seine, this past Saturday. Her 67-year-old live-in partner was present at the scene at the time of the discovery. The Nanterre public prosecutor’s office announced on Wednesday that the man has been formally charged with “murder aggravated by the vulnerability of the victim” and has been incarcerated.
Contradictory Statements and History of Violence
According to the prosecutor, the suspect gave conflicting accounts to authorities. He initially stated Liliane had not been seen for three days, but later told police she had fainted several weeks prior, fallen to the floor, and had not moved since. The man, already known to police for prior domestic violence incidents, was immediately taken into custody for questioning.
Neighbors described a troubled relationship marked by frequent alcohol abuse. “They were always intoxicated, him even more so,” said one neighbor, Andrée (name changed). “There were often arguments. Sometimes he was so drunk he would mistake his door and knock on the apartment below.” Other neighbors reported the man would often insult people he encountered in the building.
A Broader Pattern of Femicide
If the partner’s responsibility is confirmed, this case would mark the sixth femicide in France in 2026, according to data from the site noustoutes.org. The same source recorded 167 women killed by their partner or ex-partner in 2025, highlighting the ongoing crisis of domestic violence.
The discovery of Liliane’s body, under such tragic circumstances, did not come as a complete shock to those living nearby who were aware of the couple’s volatile situation.
