Juan Martin del Potro, the Argentine who captured the 2009 U.S. Open men’s singles title, headlines the list of player nominees for the 2027 International Tennis Hall of Fame class, the Hall announced Monday.
Del Potro is joined on the ballot by former WTA standouts Ash Barty of Australia and Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, setting up a vote that could enshrine three champions with markedly different career arcs.
A Career Defined by One Remarkable Fortnight
Del Potro won 22 ATP Tour titles, but his most celebrated triumph came 17 years ago at Flushing Meadows. He defeated Rafael Nadal in the semifinals and then rallied from two sets to one down to beat Roger Federer in the final, ending the Swiss star’s run of five consecutive U.S. Open crowns.
The Argentine’s international record is equally distinguished. In 2016 he led his country to its first Davis Cup championship and claimed a silver medal in singles at the Rio Olympics the same year.
Barty’s Brief but Brilliant Reign
Barty won three major singles titles and held the WTA No. 1 ranking for 121 weeks. She claimed the French Open in 2019, Wimbledon in 2021 and the Australian Open in 2022, and added a bronze medal in mixed doubles at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Kuznetsova’s Two-Way Excellence
Kuznetsova claimed two Grand Slam singles titles, at the 2004 U.S. Open and the 2009 French Open, and two doubles majors, at the Australian Open in 2005 and 2012. She won 18 singles titles and 16 doubles titles on tour, reaching a career-high No. 2 in singles and No. 3 in doubles.
How the Voting Works
Fans can cast ballots for the nominees through Oct. 25. Their results will be applied as bonus points to the voting percentages produced by the Hall’s Official Voting Group, a panel of tennis journalists, historians and Hall of Famers.
A candidate must receive at least 75 percent of the combined vote from the fans and the Official Voting Group to earn induction.
