Former US President Donald Trump recently claimed that he had a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin to initiate negotiations for ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Trump made these statements in an interview with the American newspaper New York Post on Sunday, February 9, 2025.
During the interview, Trump mentioned that he has a plan to “end the Russian attacks soon,” but avoided providing further details on the matter. When asked about the frequency of his conversations with Putin, Trump stated that Putin “doesn’t want to see more people die” and is also interested in resolving the “horrific situation.”
Moreover, Trump asserted that if he were still in office, the war in Ukraine would have never happened. He also expressed his intention to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky next week and possibly have another conversation with Putin. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov neither confirmed nor denied any talks between Trump and Putin.
In recent weeks, hopes for peace negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow have been on the rise. Zelensky, who had long been against any form of compromise, has adjusted his position in the face of advancing Russian troops and the risk of losing American support. On the other hand, Russia has presented its terms for negotiations, which have so far been deemed unacceptable by Kyiv.
