A 71-year-old woman and her accomplice have been arrested in Villeneuve-la-Garenne, France, on suspicion of financially exploiting an elderly resident of a nursing home. The suspects allegedly took advantage of the retired man’s vulnerability, defrauding him of significant sums of money over several months. The case came to light after a judicial administrator, responsible for overseeing the elderly man’s financial affairs, filed a complaint with the police.
Authorities revealed that large amounts of money had been withdrawn from the victim’s bank account over an extended period. These transactions raised suspicions, as the elderly man, who rarely leaves the nursing home, would not have been able to make such payments himself. A police source stated, “The victim’s payment methods and some identification documents were obtained by someone who had gained his trust.”
Following the arrests, police searched the female suspect’s home and recovered the victim’s payment instruments. Preliminary investigations suggest that the elderly man was defrauded of approximately €80,000. It was also reported that the victim’s late wife, who passed away last month, had been subjected to similar exploitation.
The two suspects were detained for several hours before being brought before a judge. The court placed them under judicial control, prohibiting them from visiting the victim’s nursing home or contacting each other. They are scheduled to appear in court on May 28, where they will face charges of fraud, exploiting a vulnerable person, and unlawful entry into a residence.
This incident has once again raised concerns about the protection of vulnerable and elderly members of society. Police and judicial authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to prevent such exploitation in the future. The case underscores the need for heightened vigilance and stronger safeguards to protect those most at risk of financial abuse.
