An American woman, Onijah Andrew, who came to Karachi entangled in the love of a Pakistani man, not only stirred up social media with her story but also faced mocking reviews. Onijah’s video, where she can be seen singing Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s ghazal, went viral on TikTok, sparking thousands of comments on Pakistani media and social platforms.
Onijah claims to be searching for her beloved in Karachi, despite her visa expiring. Despite efforts from Pakistani and American authorities, she is refusing to return. According to the police, the young man she talks about has moved to an unknown location with his family.
Authorities revealed that Onijah traveled to Pakistan on a tourist visa but stayed at Karachi Airport when her visa expired. With the help of Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, attempts were made to extend her visa, and the welfare organization ‘JDC’ arranged her return tickets.
Onijah, who left America for love, claimed that her supposed husband had invited her here, but upon her arrival in Karachi, the boy’s family refused the marriage. This situation not only became a challenge for Onijah’s life but also turned into a subject of ridicule on social media.
Governor Sindh and Karachi Mayor showed indifference to the matter, making Onijah’s case even more controversial. In response, many social media users criticized their behavior and expressed sympathy for Onijah’s plight.
During this time, Onijah made it clear to the police and authorities that she will not return without her husband and has also presented financial demands, including a payment of five thousand dollars per week and local citizenship.
Analysts have pointed out that the media and politicians’ insensitive attitude towards this issue is equivalent to mocking the distressed woman. It is a tragic reality that a woman’s difficulties are being turned into a joke, while the real issue is how she is here as a foreigner, driven by her emotions and love.
Onijah’s story reflects how love can sometimes create so many challenges for us, while our societal attitudes further compound her difficulties.
