Pakistan’s preparations for their high-profile Champions Trophy match against India have been dealt a blow as opener Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out due to injury. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed on Thursday that Zaman will not travel with the team to Dubai for the crucial encounter.
Zaman sustained the injury while fielding during Pakistan’s tournament opener against New Zealand at Karachi’s National Stadium. The PCB stated that further updates regarding his condition would be provided by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in due course.
The upcoming match against India, scheduled for Sunday in Dubai, carries significant weight as India opted not to travel to Pakistan for their matches. To address this, the ICC, in collaboration with the PCB and the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI), implemented a hybrid model allowing all matches involving India to be played in Dubai.
Pakistan faced a challenging start to their Champions Trophy campaign, failing to chase a 321-run target set by New Zealand. The team concluded their innings at 260 all out, with Zaman unable to assume his usual role as opener. Instead, part-time options Saud Shakeel and Babar Azam took to the crease first.
The match in Karachi marked a significant occasion as it was the first ICC tournament hosted at the National Bank Stadium since 1996. Despite the electric atmosphere and a sold-out crowd, Pakistan’s innings was hampered by a staggering 152 dot balls, highlighting their struggles with strike rotation.
As Pakistan looks to regroup for their pivotal clash against India, the absence of Zaman represents a strategic challenge for the team. The cricketing world will closely follow updates on his recovery and the subsequent impact on Pakistan’s tournament prospects.
