Israeli emergency services confirmed that five people were killed and at least twelve others wounded in a shooting attack at a bus stop in East Jerusalem on Monday. According to the Magen David Adom rescue service, four victims died at the scene, including a man in his fifties and three men in their thirties. A woman in her fifties, who was evacuated in critical condition, later died in the hospital.
Two attackers opened fire at a busy intersection in the Ramot Alon neighborhood before being neutralized by an armed civilian and a security guard who responded immediately, Israeli police reported. The assailants targeted a bus station during morning rush hour, leaving multiple people injured, including seven in serious condition. Several others suffered minor injuries from shattered glass.
Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist movement, praised the attack in an official statement, identifying the shooters as Palestinians and describing the assault as a “natural response to the crimes of the occupation.” The group did not, however, formally claim responsibility for the attack.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an emergency meeting with security officials following the incident. Medical personnel described a chaotic and devastating scene, with victims lying unconscious near the bus stop amid ongoing response efforts.
East Jerusalem, occupied and annexed by Israel since 1967, remains a focal point of ongoing Israeli-Palestinian tensions.
