In a recent turn of events, France has expressed strong disapproval following an incident involving a Russian fighter jet and a French surveillance drone. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, involved a Russian SU-35 fighter jet engaging in what has been described as an “aggressive” maneuver against a French Reaper drone conducting surveillance operations over international waters in the Eastern Mediterranean.
French Minister of Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, to voice his concerns. Accompanying his statement was a video showing the Russian aircraft approaching dangerously close to the French drone, captured by a camera mounted on the drone itself.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Lecornu labeled the Russian jet’s actions as an “aggressive action,” citing three successive close passes that could have led to a loss of control over the drone. He interpreted these actions as an attempt to hinder free aerial navigation in shared international airspace.
“This was an intentional, non-professional, and aggressive action that is unacceptable,” Lecornu stated emphatically, stressing France’s commitment to defending the freedom of navigation in international air and maritime spaces.
The occurrence comes amidst heightened tensions following a recent shift in the Ukraine conflict, marked by the involvement of former U.S. President Donald Trump. France’s firm stance underscores its dedication to maintaining operational safety and sovereignty in international zones, despite provocations.
