Teacher Assaulted by 8-Year-Old Student in Evry Highlights Critical Shortage of Disability Support Staff

Teacher Assaulted by 8-Year-Old Student in Evry Highlights Critical Shortage of Disability Support Staff

The town of Evry-Courcouronnes in the Essonne department remains in shock after a violent incident that has reignited a national debate over the lack of specialized support staff in French schools. On September 11, an 8-year-old student in a situation of disability physically assaulted and threatened to kill his teacher during recess.

A School Under Strain

According to accounts from the school community, the child — who reportedly suffers from severe psychological disorders — first argued with a classmate in the schoolyard before turning on his teacher as she attempted to separate them. The teacher received a seven-day medical leave and filed a formal complaint, according to the regional education authority.

Students returned to class on the morning of Thursday, September 24, under the watchful presence of the school principal and teachers seeking to reassure families. Parents interviewed outside the school expressed sympathy for both the child and the teaching staff.

“Honestly, [the teachers] do their best, they fight with the little resources they have. The teachers, they bend over backwards… And he’s only 8 years old. He’s a kid doing what he can with the means we have at this school,” said one mother.

Teachers Strike Over Lack of AESH Support

The incident has exposed what educators describe as an untenable situation. Teachers at the school went on strike Tuesday to denounce the shortage of AESH — Accompagnants d’Élèves en Situation de Handicap — the qualified personnel tasked with supporting students with disabilities in the classroom.

“It’s true that we are severely lacking AESH, these people who are supposed to support them in class, and these children sometimes find themselves in difficulty, regularly in difficulty,” one teacher testified.

The lack of adequate support staff has left teachers struggling to manage classrooms that include students with complex needs, often without the specialized training or assistance required to ensure the safety and education of all pupils.

Government Response

Education Minister Edouard Geffray responded to the incident, stating that the child should be placed in a specialized institution.

“The child was supposed to be cared for in a specialized institute. I have asked the rector of the Versailles academy and the director general of the Regional Health Agency to work together to urgently find — within hours or days — a placement,” Geffray said.

According to the regional education authority, the student’s schedule will also be adapted. Recruitment of AESH staff is currently underway in the department, with priority assignment given to the affected school.

Broader Systemic Challenges

The incident in Evry-Courcouronnes reflects a wider crisis in France’s approach to inclusive education. While national policy has increasingly pushed for students with disabilities to be educated in mainstream schools, the resources allocated to support this integration have not kept pace with demand.

Teachers’ unions have long warned that insufficient numbers of AESH staff — who are often employed on precarious, part-time contracts — leave both students and educators vulnerable. The situation has created tensions in schools across the country, where staff report feeling ill-equipped to handle behavioral challenges associated with certain disabilities.

The case has prompted renewed calls for the government to address the structural deficiencies in the disability support system, ensuring that both students with special needs and their teachers receive the resources and protection they require.
