A Spring-Like Start to December
The upcoming week across France is set to be dominated by remarkably mild temperatures for December, accompanied by often grey and overcast skies. While the warmth will be a welcome reprieve for many, meteorologists warn it will accelerate snowmelt in the country’s mountain ranges.
“Mildness is the theme,” emphasizes La Chaîne Météo. This pattern spells concerning news for the Vosges, Jura, and Massif Central regions, where “snow melt will accelerate,” according to forecasters.
Day-by-Day Breakdown
Monday: Following a wet weekend, conditions calm down. The Paris Basin will see limited rain but potentially gusty winds. Mist and fog will linger from the Aquitaine plains to the east-central areas, while the southeast enjoys sunshine. Morning lows will be notably high, ranging from 5°C in Auvergne valleys to 12-14°C in cities like Paris, Nantes, and Lille.
Tuesday: Despite morning mist, calm weather prevails nationwide. While cloud cover, wind, and rain affect the Channel coast, sunshine is expected elsewhere. Afternoon temperatures will be pleasantly mild, between 14°C and 20°C.
Wednesday: A weather disturbance will stretch from the southwest to the Ardennes, bringing overcast skies and scattered rain. The rest of the country stays dry, albeit cloudy. Temperatures remain high for the season.
Thursday: Morning fog will give way to numerous sunny spells in the afternoon, particularly in the south—though showers are forecast for Montpellier. A slight cooldown is expected compared to previous days.
Friday: Showers are anticipated in the northwest due to a “Breton disturbance,” with Biarritz, Montpellier, and Marseille also seeing rain. Other regions will experience breaks in the clouds while maintaining mild temperatures.
Weekend Outlook and Broader Context
The initial trend for the weekend of December 13-14 points to cloudy or very cloudy conditions, with temperatures expected to remain unseasonably mild, consistent with the preceding days.
This warm spell is part of a notable weather pattern, with forecasts suggesting temperatures could reach up to 20°C in the Southwest and significant snowmelt even at 3,000 meters altitude, highlighting an exceptional winter warm-up.
