Victim Leaves Intensive Care After Classroom Attack
A 60-year-old art teacher who was stabbed by a student in her classroom in Sanary-sur-Mer, southern France, has regained consciousness and left intensive care, the Toulon prosecutor’s office announced Thursday. However, her life remains at risk as she continues to receive hospital care.
The teacher, who suffered multiple stab wounds during an intercours period on February 3, is now under surveillance at Sainte-Anne Hospital. Prosecutor Raphaël Balland stated that while her condition is improving positively, she remains “very tired” and her vital prognosis is still engaged.
Attack Details and Student’s Motive
The assault occurred when the 14-year-old student attacked the teacher with a knife featuring a 12-centimeter blade. The victim sustained three abdominal wounds and one injury to her left forearm during the incident at the middle school.
The teenage suspect, currently in provisional detention, has admitted to the stabbing and explained he “wanted revenge” against the teacher. According to prosecutors, the student held resentment toward the educator for reports she had filed about him through Pronote, the school’s digital communication platform.
Legal Consequences and Community Impact
Formally charged and facing up to 20 years in prison due to his status as a minor under 16, the student’s attack has sent shockwaves through France’s educational community. The incident has sparked renewed debate about school safety measures and prompted calls for responses that extend beyond security-focused solutions.
This violent attack represents another troubling episode in French schools, coming amid ongoing concerns about weapons in educational institutions and the safety of teaching staff nationwide.
