Israel’s military struck a residential compound in Doha on Tuesday, killing senior Hamas leaders who were reportedly discussing a U.S.-proposed Gaza ceasefire. The attack, which took place in the capital of a key American ally, has drawn widespread condemnation and raised serious questions about regional escalation and international law.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) quickly claimed responsibility for the operation on social media, with the Prime Minister’s office stating, “Israel initiated the action, Israel conducted it, and Israel takes full responsibility.” Qatar’s foreign ministry condemned the strike as a “cowardly” and “blatant violation of all international laws and norms,” while Saudi Arabia warned of “grave consequences.”
Online, the response was swift and furious. Dutch footballer Anwar El Ghazi, who was in Doha during the attack, questioned when the world would “wake up.” Palestinian writer Dr. Yara Hawari and journalist Mehdi Hasan accused Western powers of enabling what they called Israeli aggression, with Hasan labeling Israel a “rogue state.”
Many social media users echoed a recurring theme: “What other country gets away with all of this?”—a sentiment reflecting anger over what critics see as Israel’s impunity despite repeated violations of sovereignty.
The strike also raised practical concerns about regional security. Qatar hosts Al Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. military installation in the Middle East, yet showed no signs of intercepting the attack. This has led to questions about the effectiveness of American security guarantees in the Gulf.
In a provocative move, the Speaker of Israel’s Knesset shared footage of the strike with an Arabic caption reading, “This is a message to all of the Middle East.” The statement drew predictably angry reactions but little surprise from observers accustomed to Israel’s assertive public messaging.
Calls for action grew among Western lawmakers. U.K. MP Jeremy Corbyn, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, and Canadian MP Heather McPherson all demanded an end to arms sales to Israel, pointing to Spain’s recent announcement of a full arms embargo.
As Israel continues its military campaign in Gaza and expands operations across the region, international patience appears to be wearing thin. The world is now watching to see whether global leaders will respond to what many are calling a dangerous new escalation.
