Grenoble was struck by fear and chaos on Wednesday evening following a grenade attack at a bar located in a sensitive area of the city. At least twelve individuals sustained injuries, with two reported to be in critical condition. The incident unfolded around 8 PM when an unidentified assailant entered the bar, discreetly hurled a grenade, and then fled the scene.
The establishment, known as “Auxerre,” is situated in the Villeneuve-Village-Olympique neighborhood in the southern part of Grenoble, an area often described as sensitive. The bar is a popular spot among locals and visitors alike, particularly for watching football matches.
Emergency services responded swiftly, deploying over 80 firefighters to assist the injured. Despite the rapid response, the attacker managed to escape, and no arrests have been made thus far. Police have indicated that the assailant may have been armed with a Kalashnikov rifle, although this remains unconfirmed. Initial investigations have dismissed terrorism as a motive, instead categorizing the event as an act of “extreme violence,” potentially linked to personal vendettas or criminal activities.
Grenoble’s Mayor, Éric Piolle, has strongly condemned the attack, attributing it to a surge in violence within the city. In the aftermath, Grenoble hospitals have vowed to utilize all available resources for the treatment of the victims. Meanwhile, a substantial police presence has been established in the area to maintain order and security.
The assault has instilled fear among local residents, with many attributing the violence to the ongoing drug smuggling issues plaguing the area. The community remains deeply concerned about their safety in light of the current climate.
