A dramatic incident unfolded in Paris’s city council as opposition member Nelly Garnier accused the city’s administration of partial responsibility for the death of a young boy named Elias. Garnier argued that the negligence of the left-leaning city leadership created conditions that led to the tragic event.
Elias, a 14-year-old, was killed three weeks ago in Paris by two other teenagers. Addressing the council, Garnier claimed that the current leadership’s disregard for reality fostered an environment where such a tragedy could occur.
The accusations sparked a tumultuous response within the council. Mayor Anne Hidalgo denounced Garnier’s remarks as “unacceptable” and demanded an apology, asserting that such statements have no place in the council and promising legal action against them. The controversy intensified as Rémi Féraud, leader of the Socialist group, condemned the statements as extremely dangerous, threatening legal proceedings if they were not retracted.
Despite the backlash, Garnier stood by her comments, emphasizing her commitment to questioning child safety in Paris. Her group, “Changer Paris,” criticized the mayor’s response as irresponsible and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
In response, Mayor Hidalgo announced plans to pursue legal action and invited all affected council members to do the same. The issue has gained significant political traction, with numerous political figures condemning Garnier’s remarks as an attempt to exploit the situation for political gain. Further discussions on the matter are expected in the next special meeting of the Paris council.
