In a significant move, the Indian government has given the green light for Ahmedabad to bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, eyeing the city as an “ideal host.” This development is part of India’s larger vision to host the Olympics in 2036, reflecting the country’s growing ambition in international sports.

Ahmedabad, located in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, boasts impressive sporting infrastructure including the Narendra Modi Stadium, which seats 130,000 and is recognized as the largest cricket stadium in the world. Modi’s cabinet confirmed the decision on Wednesday, highlighting Ahmedabad’s world-class facilities and robust sporting culture as key factors in its selection.

“The Narendra Modi Stadium has already proven its capability, having successfully hosted the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final,” stated the cabinet. This move underlines India’s commitment to elevating its status as a global sports destination. The city of Ahmedabad is central to this aspiration, particularly given its connection to the Prime Minister and its modern sports amenities.

Nigeria and several other countries are also contenders for the 2030 Games, amid challenges faced by the Commonwealth Games Federation in securing hosts. Following Victoria’s withdrawal from hosting the 2026 Games due to financial concerns, Glasgow stepped in and will offer a reduced format version of the event.

The selection of the 2030 host city is anticipated to be finalized in November. Should India succeed in its bid, it intends to host a comprehensive event, potentially incorporating traditional Indian sports such as kabaddi and kho kho into the program—disciplines it hopes might someday feature in the Olympics.

Despite India’s large population of 1.4 billion, its Olympic success remains modest, with the country having amassed only 10 gold medals throughout its history. The decision to pursue hosting the Commonwealth Games is a strategic step within India’s broader ambition to boost its global sporting profile and nurture talent across diverse sports disciplines.
