In a tragic accident on Wednesday, a passenger bus overturned, resulting in at least 25 fatalities and injuring 27 more on Afghanistan’s Kabul-Kandahar highway. This incident marks another deadly road mishap in the war-torn nation, known for its perilous road conditions and reckless driving often leading to fatal outcomes.
According to Abdul Mateen Qani, a spokesman for the interior ministry, the crash was attributed to the driver’s negligence. The ill-fated bus was traveling from the capital, Kabul, toward the southern city of Kandahar when the disaster struck. While the injured are receiving medical treatment, further details about their conditions have not been disclosed.
This accident follows closely on the heels of last week’s tragic collision in Herat province, where 78 people, including numerous children, lost their lives after a migrant bus returning from Iran collided with a motorcycle and a truck. Such incidents are frequent in Afghanistan, exacerbated by a lack of stringent traffic regulations and poor infrastructure resulting from decades of conflict.
In another disturbing series of events last December, collisions involving a bus, a fuel tanker, and a truck in central Afghanistan claimed at least 52 lives, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced on the country’s roads.
