NEW CHANDIGARH — Both India and the West Indies have been penalised for maintaining slow over rates during the third and final One-Day International of their series in New Chandigarh, the International Cricket Council confirmed.
The ICC said India were fined 20 percent of their match fees, while the West Indies were docked 10 percent after both sides fell behind the required over rate during the match.
Overs Short After Time Allowances
After time allowances were taken into account, India were found to be four overs short of the required rate, while the West Indies finished two overs behind schedule.
The sanctions were imposed by Prakash Bhatt, a member of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees.
Captains Accept Sanctions
Both captains admitted the offences and accepted the proposed penalties, meaning no formal hearing was required.
Under ICC regulations, players are expected to complete their allotted overs within the stipulated time, with allowances made for injuries, reviews and other stoppages. Teams falling short face financial penalties proportionate to the number of overs lost.
West Indies Make History Despite Series Defeat
India had already wrapped up the three-match ODI series with a 2-0 lead heading into the final encounter, but the West Indies produced a stunning comeback to create history.
Led by an unbeaten 162 from Shai Hope, the West Indies chased down a target of 352 runs, recording their highest successful run chase in ODI cricket.
The result gave the visitors a consolation victory in the dead rubber, though India claimed the series.
Focus Turns to T20I Series
The two sides will now shift their attention to a five-match T20I series, which begins on October 6.
