High-Level Meeting Sets Stage for 2026 Arrival
Senior Indonesian and French defense officials have convened to solidify preparations for the delivery of Indonesia’s first batch of Rafale fighter jets. The meeting between Indonesian Air Force Deputy Chief of Staff Air Marshal Tedi Rizalihadi and French National Armament Director Lieutenant Gen. Gael Diaz de Tuesta focused on logistical and training programs ahead of the anticipated arrival.
Key Preparations Underway
According to statements from the Indonesian Air Force Information Center, the discussions centered on several critical areas:
- The arrival of the first three Rafale aircraft in late January 2026.
- Supporting training programs for Indonesian personnel.
- Infrastructure development at Roesmin Nurjadin Air Base in Pekanbaru, which will host the new fleet.
- Preparations for the planned 2026 “Pegase” joint military exercise between the two nations.
Strengthening Strategic Defense Ties
The talks also broadly covered bilateral defense cooperation, with an emphasis on modernizing Indonesia’s defense equipment and enhancing its air defense capabilities. Officials expressed hope that the collaboration would significantly deepen ties between the two countries and their armed forces.
Expanding the Indonesian Air Force Fleet
Indonesia has ordered a total of 42 Rafale jets, a 4.5-generation multirole aircraft manufactured by France’s Dassault Aviation. The first batch of three is scheduled for early 2026, with a second batch of three expected around April of that year. These new aircraft will join an existing fleet that includes T-50, Hawk, Sukhoi Su-30, and F-16 fighter jets, marking a substantial upgrade to the nation’s aerial combat readiness.
Infrastructure work and specialized technician training to support the Rafale’s operations are already in progress, with senior commanders having recently inspected the developments at the Pekanbaru air base.
