KP approves free e-scooters for women in Peshawar

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has greenlit a groundbreaking mobility initiative that will provide free electric scooters to female students and working women, with the provincial capital Peshawar chosen as the launchpad for the first phase.

The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, who directed relevant departments to take immediate steps for swift implementation of the scheme.

Peshawar First, Province-Wide Expansion to Follow

Under the approved plan, Peshawar will be the initial city to benefit from the programme. Officials confirmed that the initiative will subsequently be extended to women residing in other districts across the province, broadening its reach in a phased manner.

The programme is designed to address a critical gap in urban mobility for women who rely on public transport or face safety concerns during daily commutes.

Safety and Environmental Benefits at the Core

Speaking at the meeting, Chief Minister Sohail Afridi emphasized that the electric scooters would significantly enhance commuting safety for women travelling to educational institutions and workplaces.

Beyond safety, the initiative is positioned as a key component of the province’s environmental strategy. By promoting cleaner modes of transportation, the government aims to contribute to reducing air pollution and fostering sustainable urban development.

Key Highlights of the Scheme

  • Free electric scooters for female students and working women
  • Peshawar selected as the first city for rollout
  • Province-wide expansion planned after initial phase
  • Focus on safer commuting and reduced air pollution
