LAKKI MARWAT: A five-year-old girl was martyred and five other civilians, including children, were wounded on Friday when residents intercepted a suicide bomber attempting to storm a crowded mosque during the noon prayers, security sources reported. The attack targeted a mosque in the Khairo Khel Pakka area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lakki Marwat district.
According to local officials, the assailant, identified as a member of the banned militant outfit Fitna al-Khawarij, attempted to force his way into the religious gathering. Alert worshippers and residents physically confronted the terrorist, preventing him from entering the prayer hall where hundreds had gathered.
Explosives Detonate After Intervention
The swift intervention neutralized the attacker before he could reach his intended target. However, the explosives-laden motorcycle he was riding detonated during the confrontation outside the mosque’s perimeter. The blast instantly killed a young girl and left five others with injuries, which witnesses described as severe.
Emergency response teams and local residents rushed the wounded to nearby medical facilities, where several remain in critical condition. Security forces immediately sealed off the site, launching a comprehensive search operation to collect forensic evidence and rule out the presence of secondary devices.
Regional Security Context
The thwarted attack underscores a persistent escalation in militant violence across Pakistan’s western provinces, particularly Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Security analysts have tracked a significant surge in terrorist activities since the Taliban’s return to power in neighboring Afghanistan in 2021.
In response to the deteriorating security landscape, Pakistan has conducted extensive counter-terrorism operations, including the recent “Operation Ghazab lil-Haq,” which has reportedly neutralized scores of operatives from Afghan Taliban factions and allied insurgent networks. Despite multiple diplomatic engagements, Islamabad maintains that Kabul has failed to take decisive action against terrorist sanctuaries operating from Afghan soil.
The incident highlights the ongoing human cost of militancy in the region, as communities continue to bear the brunt of targeted attacks on places of worship.
