Actor Mahira Khan has penned an emotional note to director Wajahat Hussain ahead of the premiere of Mitti De Baway, thanking him for his work on the drama and for shaping her character Billo.
The show, written by Faiza Iftikhar and directed by Hussain, marks Mahira and Wahaj Ali’s first on-screen pairing.
A Director Who ‘Believed in Billo’
Sharing a behind-the-scenes photo from the set, taken alongside Hussain and Ali, Mahira addressed her director directly, writing, “You believed in Billo and knew her more than I ever could.” The actor signed off with a personal note reading, “Love alwayssss, your Billo.”
The director reshared Mahira’s note to his own Instagram story, replying that it had “truly touched” his heart. Hussain also described the duo’s collaboration as “a memorable journey I’ll always cherish.”
Industry Peers Rally Behind the Drama
Actor Yumna Zaidi wished the best of luck to the Mitti De Baway team, sharing the drama’s premiere poster and writing that “beautiful things come from hard work and perseverance.”
The show’s first trailer drew praise from across the industry, with Kinza Hashmi saying “everything looks incredible,” and Bilal Abbas describing it as one of “the best trailers I have seen in a long time.” Industry peers including Maya Ali, Iqra Aziz, Hina Afridi, Yasir Hussain and Shuja Asad also weighed in with their excitement for the drama.
A Story of Love, Loss and Transformation
Mitti De Baway is set in rural Punjab in 1999. The story follows Billo and Baala through a romance that unravels into separation: Baala is imprisoned on an undisclosed charge, while Billo, by the time the story resumes in 2002, has transformed into a pir, or spiritual guide, with a following of her own.
A later teaser added layers to Billo and Baala’s story, hinting at past marriages and unresolved secrets. It also showed a hardened, prison-toughened Baala re-entering a life Billo had long since moved on from — leaving viewers to question whether the two find their way back to each other.
A Much-Anticipated Collaboration
Both Mahira and Wahaj have established themselves as leading names in Pakistan’s entertainment industry, making their collaboration in Mitti De Baway one of the more anticipated aspects of the project.
