Sudurpaschim Royals have appointed former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq as head coach for the third edition of the Nepal Premier League, the franchise announced through its official social media channels.
The appointment marks a significant coup for the Royals, who have topped the league standings in both previous seasons but fallen short in the final on each occasion. The franchise described Misbah as a prominent addition to its coaching staff as it seeks to convert regular-season dominance into a maiden title.
A Decorated Coaching and Leadership Résumé
Misbah arrives with extensive experience in international cricket and franchise T20 leagues. He captained Islamabad United to their maiden Pakistan Super League title in the tournament’s inaugural 2016 edition, establishing his reputation as a tactician in the shortest format.
His T20 international record includes 162 matches and 3,491 runs at an average of 33.89, with one century. In Test cricket, he led Pakistan to 26 victories in 56 matches, and under his leadership the national side rose to the top of the ICC Test rankings in 2016.
Most recently, Misbah served as batting coach for Peshawar Zalmi, who claimed their first PSL title in nine years during the 11th edition of the tournament earlier this year.
Eager to Embrace Nepal’s Cricket Passion
Speaking on his appointment, Misbah said he was relishing the opportunity to work in Nepal and experience the country’s renowned cricketing atmosphere.
“I am very excited to be joining the Sudurpaschim Royals as the head coach for the upcoming season. I have heard a lot about the passion for the cricket in Nepal. I am really looking forward to being part of that atmosphere and working with the talented group of players,” he said.
Unfinished Business for the Royals
The third edition of the Nepal Premier League is scheduled to run from October 26 to November 21. Sudurpaschim Royals enter the campaign with a point to prove, having finished top of the league table in each of the first two editions and reached both finals without lifting the trophy.
Lumbini Lions will begin the season as defending champions, adding further incentive for a Royals side now armed with one of the subcontinent’s most experienced coaching minds.
