The massive volunteer search for a missing 4-year-old boy in the Paris suburbs has ended with a tragic conclusion. Organizers announced that surveillance footage indicates the child, Madoua Dembele, fell into the water.
A Week-Long Search
Madoua was last seen on February 25th on a playground in Neuilly-Plaisance, Seine-Saint-Denis, located along the Marne river. According to a police appeal, the child, who is autistic and non-verbal, ran away from his family toward the direction of Perreux-sur-Marne.
His disappearance prompted a large-scale search operation involving hundreds of police officers, military personnel, and volunteers. Searches covered an area stretching approximately 34 kilometers across three departments.
Community Mobilization and Official Efforts
For over a week, the local community mobilized extensively. Calls for witnesses were widely shared on social media, while coordinated ground searches were conducted daily.
The public prosecutor of Bobigny detailed the immense resources deployed, including numerous patrols, neighborhood inquiries, and the mobilization of four municipal police forces.
Tragic Discovery and Ongoing Operations
In a statement published on Instagram, the group coordinating the volunteer efforts, @retrouvermadoua, announced the end of public searches “with immense sadness” following the new evidence from video footage.
While volunteer searches have ceased, authorities continue their operations to recover the child’s body so that the family can hold a funeral. The command center set up to coordinate the search will remain open to support the family and local residents.
The organizers have asked the public to respect the family’s privacy and to only share information from official sources during this painful time.
