The MTV Video Music Awards opened with a burst of star power on Sunday, as Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter claimed the night’s first trophy for best collaboration while K-pop sensation Lisa took home best pop video.
Madonna and Carpenter Open the Show in Style
The duo’s track “Bring Your Love” earned the collaboration award at the ceremony in downtown Los Angeles, moments after the pair delivered a high-energy performance of the song to a cheering crowd.
Accepting the honor, Madonna drew laughter from the audience with a playful observation about her younger collaborator.
“When I show up late, she shows up early,” Madonna said, noting that both share the old-school habit of writing lyrics on pieces of paper. “It’s been wonderful working with you, and I love this song.”
Lisa Tears Up Over Best Pop Video Win
Lisa, a member of the record-breaking group Blackpink, won best pop video for her solo effort “Dream.” Dressed in a black outfit with large white fringe sleeves, she became emotional while thanking her devoted fans, known as Lillies.
“I wouldn’t be here without you guys,” she said, clutching the VMA Moon Person trophy. “Thank you so much for your love and support.”
Taylor Swift Set for Historic Honor
Taylor Swift was in attendance and was set to receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors. Swift has directed videos for many of her biggest hits, including “The Fate of Ophelia” and “All Too Well,” as well as the new single “Patient Zero,” which was scheduled to debut during the telecast.
Swift, Madonna and Carpenter were all competing for the ceremony’s top prize of video of the year. Madonna was nominated for “Confessions II – The Film,” Carpenter for “Tears” and Swift for “Ophelia.” Winners in the top categories are determined by fan votes.
