Two players from AS Nancy Lorraine, a Ligue 2 club, have been charged with gang rape and placed in pre-trial detention, the Nancy public prosecutor’s office confirmed on Monday, October 5, corroborating a report first published by L’Est Républicain.
The complaint was filed by a 22-year-old woman, who alleges the incident occurred during the night of September 25 to 26.
Arrests and Custody
According to the prosecutor’s office, the two men were arrested and taken into police custody last Wednesday before being brought before the prosecutor on Friday.
“A judicial investigation was opened the same day,” the prosecutor’s office added, without providing further details on the circumstances of the alleged attack or the identities of the players involved.
Pre-Trial Detention Ordered
Both suspects have been placed in pre-trial detention, a measure typically reserved for serious cases where there is a risk of witness tampering, flight, or repeat offending. The decision was taken by a judge following their appearance before the prosecutor.
Under French law, being placed under formal investigation (mise en examen) indicates that there is sufficient evidence to suspect involvement in a crime, but does not constitute a conviction. The suspects are presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
Club Yet to Respond
AS Nancy Lorraine has not yet issued a public statement regarding the charges. The club, based in the Grand Est region, competes in France’s second-tier professional league.
The investigation is ongoing, and further charges or developments may follow as the judicial inquiry proceeds.
