Pakistan, Austria Forge Stronger Economic Ties, Target Illegal Migration

VIENNA – Pakistan and Austria have pledged to significantly enhance their bilateral relationship, with a sharp focus on boosting economic cooperation, trade, and joint efforts to combat illegal immigration. The commitments were solidified during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s two-day visit to Vienna, where he met with Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker and addressed a high-profile business forum.

Investment and Economic Collaboration Take Center Stage

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended a direct invitation to Austrian investors, urging them to explore lucrative opportunities in Pakistan’s key sectors. He highlighted the country’s vast potential in renewable energy, agriculture, mining, and tourism.

“Austria has world-class expertise in engineering, renewable energy, environmental technology and advanced manufacturing,” PM Shehbaz stated at the Pakistan-Austria Business Forum. He specifically called for Austrian participation in Pakistan’s renewable energy projects, grid modernization, and initiatives to add value to agricultural exports like citrus.

The Premier also announced that Pakistan will host the EU-Pakistan Business Forum in Islamabad at the end of April, anticipating strong participation from Austrian companies to further solidify economic ties.

Joint Pledge to Curb Illegal Immigration

In a significant development, the Prime Minister outlined Pakistan’s commitment to working with European partners, including Austria, Germany, and France, to address the issue of illegal migration. He noted the tragic loss of Pakistani lives annually due to human smugglers.

“We are working with our partners to curb illegal immigration,” PM Shehbaz affirmed, marking a clear diplomatic priority during the talks.

Leveraging Youth and Finalizing Agreements

Emphasizing Pakistan’s demographic dividend, the Prime Minister noted that 60% of the country’s 240 million population is young. He outlined government efforts to equip youth with modern training in AI, IT, and vocational skills, positioning Pakistan as a ready supplier of certified skilled labor for European markets.

Following delegation-level talks, both nations agreed to expedite the finalization of several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) covering diverse fields such as:

  • Trade and Investment
  • Tourism and Hospitality
  • Information Technology
  • Healthcare
  • Education and Human Resource Development

It was also agreed to expand government-to-government (G2G) and business-to-business (B2B) engagements through existing platforms.

A Foundation of Historical Ties

The leaders acknowledged the longstanding friendship between the two countries, rooted in historical connections and decades of Austrian business engagement in Pakistan, particularly in cable car installations and renewable energy technology. Both sides expressed a shared commitment to multilateralism and strengthening the United Nations system.

The visit, which included an official welcome ceremony at the Federal Chancellery, signals a renewed and robust phase in Pakistan-Austria relations, with concrete economic and strategic cooperation on the horizon.
