Pakistan Facilitates US-Iran Talks, Envoy Stresses Constructive Spirit

Envoy Outlines Islamabad’s Role Amid Regional Diplomacy

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, has stated that Islamabad is playing the role of a neutral facilitator in the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran, which are being hosted in the Pakistani capital. The ambassador emphasized that while Pakistan is actively contributing to diplomatic efforts, the ultimate responsibility for a settlement lies with the concerned parties themselves.

Constructive Spirit in Islamabad Talks

Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Ambassador Sheikh noted that the talks in Islamabad have been marked by a “constructive spirit” among the negotiating parties. He stressed that dialogue and mutual understanding are crucial for resolving the complex issues at hand and called for giving diplomacy its fullest opportunity to achieve meaningful progress.

“Pakistan has maintained its long-standing positive tradition by actively contributing to diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions,” Sheikh said during the interview broadcast on April 10, 2026.

Regional Support and Ceasefire Context

The diplomatic push comes against the backdrop of a two-week ceasefire agreement announced on April 8, which halted a confrontation that began in late February. The conflict originated from coordinated U.S. and Israeli strikes that resulted in significant casualties and regional escalation, including disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Ambassador Sheikh revealed that Pakistan has received support and cooperation from several regional partners during this process, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey.

Diverging Proposals on the Table

The negotiations center on divergent proposals from Washington and Tehran:

  • The U.S. has presented a 15-point framework focusing on Iran’s nuclear program, ballistic missiles, sanctions relief, and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Iran has countered with a 10-point proposal calling for greater control over the strategic waterway, the introduction of transit tolls, an end to regional military operations, and comprehensive sanctions lifting.

International Welcome for Pakistan’s Role

The international community has broadly welcomed Pakistan’s facilitation of the ceasefire, with several countries expressing support for Islamabad’s diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict and advance peace negotiations. Ambassador Sheikh noted that both Pakistan and the international community are expressing good wishes for a peaceful outcome to the talks.
