Pakistan, Iran Set $10 Billion Trade Target at JTC

Pakistan and Iran have drawn a bold new economic roadmap, reaffirming their commitment to elevate bilateral trade to an unprecedented $10 billion. The pledge was the centerpiece of discussions as the 10th Pakistan-Iran Joint Trade Committee (JTC) convened in Islamabad, signaling a decisive push to translate longstanding political goodwill into tangible commercial gains.

A High-Stakes Economic Dialogue

The high-level meeting was co-chaired by Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan, and Iran’s Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade, Dr. Mohammad Atabak. The Iranian delegation was notably reinforced by a 16-member business team from the Iran Chamber of Commerce, underscoring a deliberate strategy to place private-sector collaboration at the forefront of the renewed partnership.

Central to the agenda was a comprehensive review of the proposed Pakistan-Iran Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Both delegations engaged in detailed discussions on dismantling existing trade barriers, with a specific focus on harmonizing customs procedures, enhancing banking channels, and streamlining cross-border cargo movement.

Transforming Ties into Economic Partnership

Jam Kamal Khan struck a forward-looking tone, declaring that the historic brotherly ties between the two neighbors must now evolve into a robust economic partnership. “The time has come to transform our relationship,” he stated, emphasizing the urgency of finalizing the FTA without further delay.

Strategic Connectivity and New Horizons

Echoing the sentiment, Dr. Atabak characterized Pakistan as a long-term strategic trade partner for Iran. He articulated a vision for expanded regional logistics cooperation, specifically leveraging the strategic ports of Karachi and Gwadar to facilitate greater trade flows.

Beyond traditional goods, the Iranian minister identified new frontiers for economic cooperation. He pointed to electricity trade and broader regional connectivity as pivotal opportunities that could redefine the economic landscape between the two nations. Dr. Atabak voiced strong optimism that the FTA would be concluded soon, laying the legal and structural foundation for the ambitious $10 billion target.

As the JTC concluded its initial sessions, both sides expressed confidence that the meeting would yield a practical, actionable roadmap designed to elevate bilateral economic cooperation to new heights.
