Monsoon Rains Kill 4, Leave 3 Missing Across Pakistan

Monsoon Rains Kill 4, Leave 3 Missing Across Pakistan

Heavy monsoon rains and sudden cloudbursts have unleashed a wave of destruction across Pakistan, claiming the lives of at least four people, leaving three others missing, and causing extensive damage to residential areas, schools, roads, and critical public infrastructure.

Rescue Operations and Missing Persons in Khyber

In the Khyber district, intense rainfall triggered flash floods that swept away two vehicles. While women and children traveling in the vehicles were successfully rescued, police officials confirmed that three individuals remain unaccounted for. In a separate incident near the Zakariya Mosque in the Khuga Khel area, a car was trapped in surging floodwaters, though all occupants were pulled to safety.

Rising Rivers and Erosion Devastate Punjab

The Chenab River is experiencing low-level flooding, with water levels continuing to rise at Head Qadirabad in Hafizabad. Inflows have reached 138,000 cusecs against outflows of 115,000 cusecs, threatening adjacent low-lying areas. Further south in Layyah, the powerful currents of the Indus River have caused catastrophic erosion. Two government schools were completely washed away in the Samran Sheeb area. The relentless river erosion has also damaged hundreds of acres of farmland, destroyed approximately 300 houses, leveled more than five settlements, and swept away three mosques, electricity poles, and other public property.

Infrastructure Collapse and Valley Flooding

For the second consecutive year, torrential rains destroyed the community-funded Kohlia Bridge near Hassan Abdal. The collapse has severed road links between several border villages of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, severely disrupting daily life and transportation. In the scenic Neelum Valley, a cloudburst caused streams to overflow violently, inundating homes and shops. Several vehicles, motorcycles, and livestock were swept away near Mengal Nala, while traffic on the main Neelum Highway came to a standstill.

Cloudbursts Hit Tourist Destinations

The Jabori area of Mansehra suffered significant damage after a cloudburst struck, damaging multiple hotels and residential buildings. Sudden flash floods disrupted normal life, prompting authorities to issue urgent advisories. Tourists have been strictly warned to stay away from the Kunhar River and other waterways in the Kaghan Valley, Siran Valley, and other vulnerable areas due to the high risk of flooding. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in the popular hill stations of Murree and Galiyat brought a noticeable drop in temperatures, though the downpour added to the region’s weather woes.

Landslide Tragedy in Nagar

In the northern Nagar district, a separate weather-related tragedy occurred when a landslide struck the Budda Las area of Chalt. Four laborers were killed and three others were injured as they were returning home from work and became trapped under falling debris. Rescue officials identified one of the deceased as Shafqat from Layyah and another as Fida Hussain, a local resident of Chalt. The remaining two victims were residents of Kohistan. Their bodies have been shifted to their native areas for burial.
