In a significant boost for domestic connectivity, Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi has announced the resumption of two long-suspended train services, citing overwhelming public demand. The Babu Passenger and Sandal Express, both mothballed during the COVID-19 pandemic, will return to the tracks this month.
Service Resumption Dates and Routes
Pakistan Railways has confirmed that the Babu Passenger, which connects Lahore to Lala Musa, will officially resume service on August 20. The following day, on August 21, the Sandal Express will be restored, running its traditional route from Multan to Sargodha via Jhang. The revival ends a hiatus of several years for both services.
Government Responds to Passenger Pressure
Minister Abbasi stated the decision was a direct response to sustained requests from the traveling public and was deemed essential for the health of the railway network. He emphasized that the move aligns with a broader strategy to enhance the utility and reach of Pakistan Railways.
“This is just the beginning,” Abbasi indicated, promising that additional suspended train services are slated for revival later in the year. He further assured that passenger facilities would undergo systematic improvements, framing the initiative as part of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision for a modernized and accessible rail system.
