Pakistan Urges UN to Restore Strait of Hormuz Shipping

Pakistan has issued a stark warning at the United Nations, calling for the immediate restoration of normal shipping through the critical Strait of Hormuz. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad told the General Assembly that ongoing disruptions are causing widespread damage to global trade, energy security, and the livelihoods of vulnerable populations worldwide.

A Call for Safe Passage and De-escalation

Addressing a veto debate on April 17, 2026, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative emphasized the urgent need to secure one of the world’s most vital maritime chokepoints. “Pakistan calls for the security of ships and crew members, and the swift and safe passage of civilian ships, and restoration of normal passage through the Strait,” Ambassador Ahmad stated. He expressed deep concern over recent Middle East tensions, stressing that the conflict “should never have happened” given its severe consequences.

The “Islamabad Process” and Diplomatic Outreach

The ambassador outlined Pakistan’s proactive diplomatic efforts to foster stability. He highlighted the “Islamabad Talks” held on April 11-12 as a cornerstone of the “Islamabad Process,” aimed at achieving a ceasefire and long-term peace. Pakistan’s strategy involves sustained engagement with key stakeholders, including outreach to Washington, Tehran, and regional partners to facilitate dialogue.

Global Economic Fallout and Food Security

The statement detailed the tangible global impact of the shipping disruptions. Ambassador Ahmad warned that the situation is adversely affecting energy supplies, fertilizer shipments, and the flow of essential commodities. “The impact is felt not only in terms of energy flows but also in fertilisers and other essential commodities, thus affecting food security, cost of living and squeezing the livelihood of the most vulnerable,” he explained. He cautioned that continued military escalation would prolong suffering and extend economic hardship far beyond the region.

Solidarity and a Path Forward

Reaffirming Pakistan’s regional commitments, the envoy expressed “continued and unwavering support and complete solidarity with the fraternal GCC countries,” underscoring respect for their sovereignty and security. Pakistan pledged to continue playing a constructive role in promoting dialogue and supporting efforts toward a lasting regional peace, arguing that a return to stability would benefit all stakeholders in the global community.
