Suparco Marks Major Milestone in Human Spaceflight Ambitions
Pakistan has taken a decisive step toward launching its first astronaut into space. The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has successfully completed the secondary selection phase for astronaut candidates, moving the nation closer to a landmark mission aboard China’s space station.
Rigorous Selection Process
Following an initial screening in Pakistan, two candidates were shortlisted after undergoing comprehensive medical, psychological, and aptitude assessments at the Astronauts Centre of China (ACC). These evaluations were conducted in strict accordance with international human spaceflight standards, ensuring the candidates meet the rigorous demands of space travel.
Path to the Stars
The selected candidates will now embark on a six-month advanced astronaut training program at the ACC. Upon successful completion, one candidate will be chosen to participate in a spaceflight mission to the Chinese Space Station (CSS), currently scheduled for October or November 2026.
A Partnership Forged in Cooperation
This initiative is anchored in the bilateral Astronaut Cooperation Agreement signed in February 2025. The agreement, championed under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, reflects a strategic vision that enabled Pakistan’s entry into human spaceflight. The development also highlights Pakistan’s unique status as the first foreign partner selected for China’s astronaut program, underscoring the deepening scientific and technological cooperation between the two nations.
A New Chapter in Space Exploration
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) described this achievement as a landmark for Pakistan’s space ambitions. It represents not only a national scientific triumph but also a testament to the growing collaboration in advanced technological domains between Pakistan and China, setting the stage for a historic launch in late 2026.
