Paramount Pictures has announced it will produce a live-action film based on the blockbuster video game franchise “Call of Duty.” The studio, recently acquired by Skydance and now under the leadership of David Ellison, confirmed the project as part of a broader effort to revitalize the company.
Ellison, a longtime fan of the series, described the adaptation as a “dream come true” and emphasized the responsibility of bringing the game’s “extraordinary narrative universe” to theaters. The deal was struck with Activision Blizzard, the developer behind the franchise, which boasts over 100 million monthly players.
Since its debut in 2003, “Call of Duty” has sold more than 500 million copies across more than 30 titles. The most recent installment, “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6,” released in 2024, is set in the 1990s and follows a security team targeting a senator and a top-secret site in Washington.
While financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, the partnership may extend to additional films and TV series based on the game, according to industry reports.
This move follows a recent trend of successful video game adaptations in Hollywood. Despite a history of box-office disappointments, films like “Super Mario Bros.” and “Minecraft” have recently grossed over a billion dollars each, signaling a shift in audience reception toward game-inspired cinema.
Paramount previously found success with its adaptation of “Sonic the Hedgehog,” another popular game franchise.
