Perplexity has officially unveiled its new Android application, Perplexity Assistant, positioning it as more than just a chatbot. The U.S.-based company describes it as a true voice assistant capable of competing with platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini. While ChatGPT and Gemini already offer applications that integrate with smartphone operating systems to enable voice-based interactions, Perplexity has now entered the arena with its own Android app. Currently available on the Play Store, the iOS version is still in development. The chatbot supports conversations in 15 languages.
On January 23, Perplexity introduced its assistant on X (formerly Twitter), stating that it can “help with your daily tasks using logical reasoning, research, and app integration, whether it’s answering simple questions or performing multi-app actions.” The application allows users to book dinner reservations, search for song titles, call an Uber, write emails, and set reminders. While these features are also available in other assistants, Perplexity Assistant’s standout strength lies in its web search capabilities.
Perplexity is widely regarded as one of the best chatbots for web-based research. It aggregates information from multiple sources, cross-checks them, and provides users with accurate answers. This capability could pose a challenge to Google, as users’ information-seeking habits continue to evolve.
Perplexity Assistant functions as a genuine voice assistant, which can be set as the default assistant in Android settings. It can be activated at any time, such as by pressing the power button. Some of its features, like recommending bars, grocery stores, or tourist attractions, are particularly useful. It can also guide users to these locations. However, for bookings at restaurants or theaters, the system relies on third-party integrations.
According to the company, Perplexity Assistant supports platforms like YouTube, Spotify, and Uber. However, opening these apps directly through the assistant is not yet possible. Described as “multimodal,” the tool can respond to text, voice, and image-based queries. For instance, users can take a photo of an item to retrieve information about it, such as nutritional details for a food product.
Despite its potential, Perplexity Assistant still has some shortcomings. The company faces significant pressure from industry giants like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google. To stay competitive, Perplexity is rapidly rolling out new features, even if they are not fully polished.
The future of Perplexity Assistant appears promising, but further improvements are needed to solidify its position in the market. As the tool evolves, it has the potential to become a major player in the artificial intelligence space.
