PESHAWAR — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Peshawar on Thursday to chair a provincial apex committee meeting on law and order, with the security review taking place against the backdrop of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi are accompanying the prime minister on the visit, according to official sources. The meeting, scheduled at the Governor House, will review the province’s security situation and discuss measures to strengthen peace and stability.
Development Projects Also on the Agenda
Beyond security, the prime minister is expected to meet Governor Faisal Karim Kundi to discuss key development projects planned for the province, sources said.
The visit follows sweeping political and administrative changes in KP after emergency and governor’s rule were imposed on October 11.
Constitutional Basis for Federal Move
President Asif Ali Zardari approved the measures under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, respectively, on the recommendation of the federal cabinet. The Centre cited the deteriorating security situation and what it described as inadequate cooperation from the PTI-led provincial government in counterterrorism efforts.
Under the decision:
- Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, his cabinet and advisers ceased to hold office.
- Executive authority shifted to Governor Faisal Karim Kundi.
- An 11-member advisory council was announced to assist the governor.
- A separate Area Development Secretariat was established for 12 terrorism-affected districts: Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Kurram, Orakzai, Upper South Waziristan, Lower South Waziristan and North Waziristan.
- The Centre authorised the deployment of the Pakistan Army under Article 245 of the Constitution to assist the civil administration.
Thursday’s apex committee session is expected to assess the implementation of these measures and the security challenges facing the province as the new administrative arrangement takes hold.
