PPP Warns of Withdrawing Support, Calls System Ineffective

PPP Warns of Withdrawing Support, Calls System Ineffective

In a stark warning that signals deepening fissures within Pakistan’s ruling coalition, senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Nadeem Afzal Chan has declared the federal government a failure and indicated his party may withdraw its crucial support at an appropriate time.

Speaking on Dunya News programme ‘Dunya Mehr Bukhari Ke Saath’, Chan painted a grim picture of the national situation, insisting that all political parties must transcend personal interests to find a joint solution to the country’s mounting challenges.

Echoing Calls for Unity

Chan expressed agreement with recent statements by Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who has advocated for all stakeholders to come together. The PPP leader argued that Naqvi’s stance carries significant weight and merits serious debate in both parliament and the media.

“When the interior minister himself expresses concern about the situation in the country, it shows the seriousness of the situation,” Chan remarked, adding that the PPP was taken by surprise by Naqvi’s recent comments. He revealed that President Asif Ali Zardari also had no prior knowledge of the interior minister’s intended statement.

Systemic Failure and a Reckoning

In a significant departure from routine political rhetoric, Chan questioned the very foundations of the country’s governance model. He stated that the time has come to decide whether Pakistan should continue under a parliamentary system or adopt a presidential system.

“As a political worker, I feel the current system is not working effectively,” Chan asserted, delivering a damning verdict on the government’s performance while explicitly stating that the administration had failed.

The Nuclear Option

The most potent element of Chan’s commentary was the clear signal that the PPP, a key coalition partner, is prepared to exercise its leverage. He made it clear that if necessary, the party could decide to withdraw its support from the government at an appropriate time, a move that would plunge the ruling alliance into crisis.

Throughout the conversation, Chan emphasized that a broad political dialogue is the need of the hour to resolve national issues, suggesting that the window for corrective action is narrowing rapidly.
